The chief researcher Dr. Joseph McPartlin and his colleagues published the study in the January 19 issue of the leading British medical journal “The Lancet” (359:227-28, 2002) as a basis for their recommendations to include Folic Acid and Vitamin B12 in the government’s grain fortification program throughout the U.K. The researchers investigated the correlation between homocysteine levels and Folate and Vitamin B12 status before and after supplementation. To maintain control, the 30 healthy male and 23 healthy female participants were instructed to avoid supplements and foods fortified with Folic Acid and other B Vitamins before and during the 36-week study. For 26 weeks, the men were given Folic Acid at increasing dosage levels . . . from 100 mcg. daily to 400 mcg. daily, while the women received 500 mcg. daily. The supplementation period was followed by a 10-week washout period and the participants were re-sampled. The results of the study showed a strong correlation between continued daily intake of Folic Acid with Vitamin B12 and reduced homocysteine levels. As serum concentrations of Folate and Vitamin B12 rose, plasma homocysteine fell significantly. It has long been established that each of the B vitamins work synergistically with one another; Findings of this report along with earlier studies, suggest that greater benefits for disease prevention are likely to be achieved if Vitamin B12 / B Complex factors are included along with Folic Acid.
